Papers, 1850-1857.

Merchant employed by Crocker and Warren of New York City. He sailed to China in 1854 in the Swordfish to examine the business prospects there. Papers include letters to his father, James T. Hayward, from New York concerning the shipping business, 1850-54; and letters of introduction to merchants in China and Manila from Crocker and Warren, F.T. Bush, and John M. Forbes, among other merchants. Also, a notebook, 1856-57, with notes on ships' cargoes, tea, ginger, cassia, firecrackers, sugar, and exchange rates; and a treatise on tea--types, preferences, the method of examining a cargo, etc.
